How Often Do AI Platforms Cite Reddit? A New-Brand Pilot
By Satish K · 11 min read · Published July 27, 2026
Reddit accounted for 1.03% of all citations in this pilot, yet 47.81% of Perplexity's social citations, the same underlying data measured two different ways. A first-party field report on why every AI-citation statistic needs its denominator.
TL;DR
- This is a field report from a pilot, not a definitive benchmark: it draws on 220,111 citations from 20 newly-onboarded brands with near-zero domain authority, tracked between 20–26 July 2026 (Astiva AI platform data). It is v1 of a planned quarterly series.
- AI citation share is the proportion of source references in AI-generated answers that point to a given domain, and the "Reddit number" everyone quotes depends entirely on which denominator is used.
- In this pilot, Reddit accounted for 1.03% of all citations.
- Measured against social and user-generated citations only, Reddit's share rises to 47.81% on Perplexity and just 3.53% on ChatGPT, the same data, two very different numbers.
- Reddit reliance does not track citation volume: Perplexity and ChatGPT together supplied 51.88% of all citations in the pilot, yet sit at opposite ends of the Reddit range.
- Even for these near-zero-authority brands, citations landed on mid-authority third-party domains, consistent with Ahrefs' finding that brand mentions predict AI citations far better than backlinks (Ahrefs, 2026).
- The data was produced by Astiva AI, the Competitive Intelligence platform for AI Search and Visibility.
The single most reliable takeaway from this pilot is definitional, not statistical: the "Reddit number" is meaningless without its denominator. In this dataset, Reddit accounted for 1.03% of all citations yet 47.81% of Perplexity's social citations, the same behavior, measured two ways. The gap between published Reddit figures, roughly 1% to 40%, is a disagreement about the base, not about Reddit.
Reddit is 1.03% of all citations but 47.81% of Perplexity's social citations. The same dataset produces different numbers depending on how citation share is measured.
Definition
AI citation share is the proportion of the source references inside AI-generated answers that point to a specific domain. Three different denominators circulate under this single label: share of all citations, share of social and user-generated citations only, and share of answers containing at least one link to the domain. Each produces a different number from identical underlying behavior. Astiva AI is the Competitive Intelligence platform for AI Search and Visibility, and the data below is drawn from its citation-tracking infrastructure.
What Is This Field Report, and What Does It Not Claim?
This is a pilot field report on how nine AI platforms cited Reddit for a cohort of 20 newly-onboarded, near-zero-authority brands over one week (20–26 July 2026). It is scoped deliberately: it describes the behavior observed for this cohort, and it does not claim to represent how AI cites Reddit across the whole web or for established brands.
The headline finding is a framework, not a benchmark number. The percentages below are illustrations from a small, marketing-and-SaaS-skewed pilot; the durable insight is the method for reading any AI-citation statistic correctly. Larger published datasets exist, Profound analysed 680 million citations (Profound, August 2024–June 2025), and this report is designed to sit alongside them as a scoped data point, not to replace them.
Why Do Published Reddit Citation Figures Disagree?
Published Reddit figures disagree because three measures share one label, and each divides by a different base. A figure without its denominator is unfalsifiable. This is a logical point that holds for any dataset of any size, which is why it, not the specific percentage, is the report's central contribution.
A widely-repeated 40.1% figure comes from a June 2025 study of more than 150,000 LLM citations that counted answers containing a Reddit link, not citations, a different denominator entirely, as QuickSEO's June 2026 analysis notes. Profound's 6.6% figure for Perplexity uses share of all citations. Both are correct for what they measure.
How three different denominators produce three different published Reddit figures from the same underlying behavior
| Denominator | What It Counts | Typical Published Range |
|---|
| All citations | Every source reference across every tracked answer | ~1% to 6.6% |
| Social/UGC citations only | References to community and social platforms, excluding editorial and vendor domains | ~21% to 47% |
| Answers containing ≥1 Reddit link | Presence at answer level, not reference level | ~40% |
The third measure counts an answer once if Reddit appears anywhere in it, regardless of how many other domains the same answer cites. An answer citing Reddit plus nine editorial sources registers as a "Reddit answer" under this measure and as 10% Reddit under the first. This pilot measures the first two denominators; it does not measure the third, because the underlying data records citations rather than answer-level presence.
"The mistake I see most often is quoting a citation-share number without its denominator. One percent of all citations and forty-eight percent of social citations can both be true of the same dataset in the same week. Before you trust any AI-citation statistic, including ours, ask what it is dividing by, and how big the sample is." — Satish Kumar, Co-Founder & CEO, Astiva AI
What Share of All AI Citations Went to Reddit in the Pilot?
Reddit accounted for 2,257 of 220,111 citations, or 1.03%, in this pilot cohort (Astiva AI platform data, 20 new brands, 20–26 July 2026). All social and user-generated domains combined reached 3.11%; the remaining 96.89% went to editorial publications, vendor sites, documentation, and directories. Reddit was not among the most-cited domains overall in this cohort.
This is the first denominator: every source reference across every tracked answer. Measured this way, community platforms were a small minority of what AI systems cited for these new-brand prompt sets. The direction is consistent with a Yext study of 6.8 million citations, which reported approximately 2% of AI citations come from forums, with 86% from brand-controlled sources (Yext, reported June 2026).
Share of all 220,111 pilot citations by source domain (Astiva AI platform data, 20–26 July 2026)
| Source | Citations | % of All Citations |
|---|
| Non-social domains | 213,266 | 96.89% |
| Reddit | 2,257 | 1.03% |
| X/Twitter | 1,801 | 0.82% |
| LinkedIn | 1,692 | 0.77% |
| YouTube | 356 | 0.16% |
| Instagram | 240 | 0.11% |
| Wikipedia | 227 | 0.10% |
| Facebook | 176 | 0.08% |
| Quora | 96 | 0.04% |
| Total | 220,111 | 100% |
Wikipedia is grouped into the social and user-generated bucket here because it is community-edited (Astiva AI platform data, July 2026). That definitional choice inflates the social denominator slightly, but its effect on Reddit's share of all citations is nil, because Wikipedia is 0.10% of the corpus. For reference, Wikipedia is the most-cited single source on ChatGPT at approximately 7.8% of citations, with Reddit at roughly 1.8% (multiple ChatGPT citation studies, Q1 2026).
Which AI Platforms Cited Reddit Most in the Pilot?
Reddit reliance varied by more than a hundredfold across platforms measured against all citations: DeepSeek cited Reddit in 3.54% of its citations, ChatGPT in 0.03% (Astiva AI platform data, 20–26 July 2026). Within this pilot, a single cross-platform "Reddit number" therefore describes no individual platform accurately, and buyers researching inside different platforms encounter substantially different source mixes.
Cross-platform variation of this magnitude is not unique to this cohort. Superlines found citation volume varies up to 615× between AI platforms (Superlines, March 2026), which is the structural reason single-platform monitoring is insufficient for any brand.
Reddit citation share by AI platform, measured against each platform's total citations
| Platform | Reddit Citations | Platform Total | Reddit % of Platform |
|---|
| DeepSeek | 568 | 16,056 | 3.54% |
| Perplexity | 1,234 | 62,428 | 1.98% |
| Meta AI | 205 | 18,466 | 1.11% |
| Grok | 103 | 15,688 | 0.66% |
| Gemini | 100 | 16,807 | 0.60% |
| Claude | 28 | 38,804 | 0.07% |
| ChatGPT | 17 | 51,759 | 0.03% |
Figure 1. Reddit citation share varies dramatically between AI platforms, ranging from 3.54% on DeepSeek to just 0.03% on ChatGPT.
Measured against social citations alone, the same data produced figures an order of magnitude higher. This is the second denominator, and the one most published Reddit statistics implicitly use.
Reddit citation share by AI platform, measured against each platform's social/UGC citations only
| Platform | Reddit Citations | Social Citations | Reddit % of Social |
|---|
| Perplexity | 1,234 | 2,581 | 47.81% |
| Meta AI | 205 | 606 | 33.83% |
| DeepSeek | 568 | 1,807 | 31.43% |
| Grok | 103 | 365 | 28.22% |
| Gemini | 100 | 476 | 21.01% |
| Claude | 28 | 299 | 9.36% |
| ChatGPT | 17 | 482 | 3.53% |
Figure 2. The same underlying citation dataset produces very different percentages depending on whether Reddit is measured against all citations or only social citations.
Perplexity's 47.81% is close in shape to figures published elsewhere: Tinuiti's Q1 2026 report placed Reddit at 44% of Google AI Overviews' social citations (Tinuiti, March 2026). The correspondence indicates both analyses measure the same phenomenon under the same denominator, on different platforms. Note the pilot caveat: measured across the two contributing environments separately, Perplexity's Reddit-of-social figure ranged from 25.30% to 54.35%, so 47.81% is a point estimate within a wide band.
Do AI Platforms Preferentially Cite High-Authority Domains?
Citation volume peaked at mid-authority domains, not top-authority ones, in the pilot (Astiva AI platform data, July 2026). In the production subset of 73,718 citations, volume rose through authority deciles 4 and 5, approximate authority scores 35 to 45, which together formed the largest bucket at roughly 40,000 citations, then fell above that band. This is a notable result given that the 20 tracked brands themselves began with near-zero domain authority: even for brand-new sites, AI platforms drew their answers from mid-authority third-party sources rather than from the highest-authority domains. Where references land is not where domain authority is highest, and it is not gated by the tracked brand's own authority.
This direction aligns with independent research that decouples AI citation from traditional ranking authority. Brand mentions across the web correlate with AI citations at r=0.664, while backlinks correlate at just r=0.10, brand mentions are roughly 6× more predictive of AI citations than backlinks (Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, 2026). Separately, only 38% of AI Overview citations come from pages ranking in Google's top 10 organic, down from 76% in July 2025 (Ahrefs, February 2026, 863,000 keyword SERPs analysed). AI citation share is a different signal from search ranking, and this pilot's mid-authority peak is one more data point in that direction.
What Does This Mean for Brands Measuring AI Visibility?
Brands should treat every AI-citation statistic, including this one, as denominator-dependent, platform-specific, and sample-bounded before acting on it. AI citation share is only comparable across studies when the base, the platform mix, and the sample match. A 40% figure and a 1% figure can describe identical behavior.
Three practical implications follow, stated at the level this pilot supports. First, channel strategy should be platform-aware: in this cohort a Reddit presence surfaced far more inside Perplexity (47.81% of social citations) than inside ChatGPT (3.53%), so the value of community content depends on which platforms a brand's buyers use. Second, measurement must be multi-platform: with citation volume varying up to 615× across platforms (Superlines, March 2026), a single-platform tool misrepresents reach. Third, authority is not the lever it is in SEO: the mid-authority citation peak and the r=0.10 backlink correlation (Ahrefs, 2026) both suggest that being mentioned in the right contexts matters more than raising domain authority, an encouraging signal for new and small brands specifically. Methodology
- **Study type:** Pilot field report (v1 of a planned quarterly series). Scoped to the cohort below; not a cross-industry benchmark.
- **Data source:** First-party citation-tracking data captured by Astiva AI from live platform interfaces, the Detect phase of the Detect → Diagnose → Displace → Prove Cycle. Every source reference returned in each response was recorded. No citations were synthesized, seeded, or manually entered.
- **Collection window:** 20 July 2026 to 26 July 2026 (one week).
- **Sample:** 220,111 citations across 20 distinct newly-onboarded brands, each with near-zero domain authority (approximate domain rating ~0) at the start of the window, drawn from two independent production-grade environments. This is an onboarding-cohort experiment on new brands, not a panel of established brands.
- **Platforms tracked:** Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude, Meta AI, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, Grok, Google AI Mode, and Microsoft Copilot.
- **Citation definition:** A citation is a single source reference returned inside an AI-generated answer.
- **Social/UGC bucket:** Reddit, X/Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, Wikipedia, Facebook, and Quora. All other domains are classified as non-social.
Limitations
This is a small, scoped pilot, and its findings should be read as directional.
- **Sample scope:** 220,111 citations across 20 brands over one week is a first-party pilot, not a random cross-industry sample; larger published work operates at far greater scale (Profound analyzed 680 million citations). Percentages here are illustrations from the cohort, not population estimates.
- **New-brand cohort:** all 20 brands were newly onboarded with near-zero domain authority at the start of the window, so these citations reflect the source mix AI platforms return for new-brand prompt sets, not citations earned by the tracked brands, and not behavior observed for established, high-authority brands. Findings should not be generalized to mature brands without a separate cohort.
- **Brand mix:** the tracked brands skew toward marketing and SaaS tooling, so the domain profile reflects that skew.
- **Single week:** a seven-day window captures a snapshot, not a trend; the planned quarterly re-run will establish movement over time.
- **Authority and position data:** the authority-decile and citation-position findings are drawn from the production subset only and are reported as directional, not precise.
- **Platform sample sizes:** Google AI Mode (53 citations) and Microsoft Copilot (50 citations) returned samples too small to report percentages and are excluded from platform-level interpretation.
- **Perplexity social share:** measured across the two contributing environments separately, Perplexity's Reddit-of-social figure ranges from 25.30% to 54.35%; the 47.81% combined figure should be read as a point estimate within that range.
