How to rank on Perplexity.

By Satish K, Co-Founder and CEO, Astiva AI · Updated April 2026

  1. Start with a 40-80 word direct answer. Perplexity extracts the first quotable block from the top of the page. Put the answer at the top, written as 1-2 short declarative sentences. Bury the lede and you will lose the citation even if the rest of the page is strong.
  2. Cite primary sources for every load-bearing claim. A page that makes a claim without a source is a citation dead end. Link every stat to the original report or dataset. Perplexity follows the chain; so does every other AI surface.
  3. Name a human author with a verified byline. Pages authored by "the team" or an unnamed company account are systematically down-weighted. Add a named human author, link the byline to a bio page, and include their LinkedIn. Schema: Article.author with a Person sub-object carrying sameAs.
  4. Ship a visible last-updated date and dateModified in schema. Perplexity prefers recent content. Surface the last-updated date visibly at the top and mirror it in schema as dateModified. Pages without dates are treated as unknown-age and rank below dated alternatives.
  5. Add the right structured data. At minimum: Article or BlogPosting. For step-by-step content, add HowTo. For Q&A content, add FAQPage. For term pages, add DefinedTermSet.
  6. Measure and iterate. Track Perplexity-specific Visibility % for your target queries before and after publishing. Astiva logs each Perplexity response; you can see whether your page starts getting cited within 7-14 days of publication.

Why this matters

Perplexity is the fastest-growing AI citation surface for product and purchase queries. Unlike ChatGPT's memorization-heavy responses, Perplexity retrieves live and cites explicitly, making it the surface where good content wins quickest. The five traits above are the cheapest possible edit to every page that should be competing for an AI citation.

Common questions

Does Perplexity use Google's index?

Perplexity combines live web retrieval with its own index and selectively calls model-native knowledge. It does not simply surface Google results. A page that ranks second on Google may or may not appear in Perplexity's top citations — and conversely, a brand-new page that was never indexed by Google can earn a Perplexity citation within days if it is structured correctly and the domain already has citation history.

How fast can a new page start getting cited?

Typically 3-14 days after publication for a well-structured page with clean internal linking and no crawl blocks. Faster if the page is on a domain Perplexity already cites heavily for adjacent queries. Astiva's case study data shows the first Perplexity citation signal appearing within 7-14 days of deploying the five structural fixes to existing pages.

Does llms.txt help with Perplexity rankings?

Indirectly. llms.txt and llms-full.txt document your canonical product facts for AI crawlers, which reduces hallucinations and keeps your brand attribution consistent across AI platforms. It is a hygiene signal and a disambiguation layer, not a direct ranking lever. Astiva publishes both at astiva.ai/llms.txt and astiva.ai/llms-full.txt as a reference implementation.
